Chances are you’ve heard the news that washing your hair every day is a beauty routine of the past. There’s more and more evidence that shows it’s actually better for you to NOT wash your hair daily. Now you may be totally on board with that…other than the fact that you also experience greasy hair quickly. We’ve all been there where we feel like we’re doing the right thing for our hair and then realize our hair starts to look greasy. So how do we avoid greasy hair? We’ve discovered a few ways for fighting the greasies so you can spend less time worry and more time rocking your locks.

Get On A Schedule
The thing about having oily or greasy hair is your natural instinct is to want to continuously wash your hair to eliminate the grease. The downside of that is you’re likely actually causing your hair to become even greasier. When we wash our hair we’re stripping our hair of the natural oils, when we do strip the hair of the natural oils its natural reaction is to replace that oil – see the cycle? So while you want to continuously wash it, it’s probably making things worse. Now before you go and skip washing your hair for days on end, experts suggest actually tapering down and getting on more of a schedule. If you’re washing your hair daily now, try skipping every other day and work your way up. It’s said that most people should be able to go 2-3 days without washing, for the best results and hair health. Once you taper down your washing, get on more of a set schedule to keep track and help you get a system in place.

Use Proper Products
If you’re prone to greasy hair, one of the biggest factors you need to consider (other than the hair washing) is what type of haircare products you’re using. You’re going to want to air on the side of lightweight products that are going to give your hair the moisture it needs (as well as lock in natural moisture) but also not add too much weight or product to your hair. Often times using haircare products that are heavy can add to looking/feeling like your hair is greasy. If you have really greasy hair, look for haircare products that are specifically formulated for your hair type to make the most out of using them.

Healthy Hair Habits
Of course, we couldn’t talk about haircare with greasy hair without mentioning getting into healthy hair habits. We’re all prone to picking up a few bad habits every once in a while, but when you’re really wanting to avoid greasy hair it’s extra important. Touching your hair ALL the time is one of those bad habits, we all do it, but when you’re prone to greasy hair it can really add to that quickly. The oil from your hands is going directly into your hair – no good! Additionally, avoiding using heated styling tools every day can be another factor to consider when fighting greasy hair. It adds to the stress of your hair, and it’s best to not use those every single day anyways.

In the spirit of back to school time, we know you’re eager to find ways to maximize your sleep schedule as much as possible. Let’s be honest, most of us want to sleep as long as possible and spend as little time doing our hair as we can. While it may feel like that’s pretty darn near impossible, there are actually some really creative and easy ways for getting better hair in your sleep. Don’t believe us? Prep Your Hair At Night
While you may be in the habit of washing your hair in the morning to get going, experts actually suggest that you wash your hair at night to allow it to air dry through the night. Not only does this cut down on your drying time in the morning, but it’s also a lot healthier for your hair. In addition, just because you’re not blow drying your hair at night doesn’t mean you should skip applying product. Apply a small amount of haircare product to your hair after washing, depending on what type of look you want (i.e. volume, frizz-free, etc.). Not only does washing your hair allow you to cut back the heated hair styling, but you’re also cutting your morning routine time down by quite a bit! Winning for sure!

Pin Your Hair Up
If you’re like us, you’ve definitely been in a habit of keeping your hair down at night. Experts have said that we all need to kick that habit to the curb. Going to sleep with your hair down can cause you to have knots, tangles and even hair breakage. Instead, loosely tie your hair back. There are actually quite a few different ways to tie your hair back that can give you an instant hairstyle in the morning, depending on what you want to wake up to. If you just want loose waves, tying your hair back in a loose top knot will do the trick. If you want something a little more wavy or even curly, securing your hair in braids or smaller little buns all around your head will be your go-to. Not only are these little bed time hairstyles easy to achieve, but they’re also heat free! They really allow you to go to bed with your hair pinned back and wake up to a gorgeous hairstyle that you just need to let your hair down to achieve.

Little Extras 
you may have heard that the pillow cases are being found to have a huge impact on your hair and skin. If you want to give your hair extra loving at night and protect it continuously, using silk pillowcases are amazing for your hair because they’re much gentler than cotton or other fabrics. In addition, experts suggest getting in the habit of massaging your scalp at night. Massaging your scalp has amazing benefits and gets the blood circulating – which also promotes hair growth.

Fun Back To School Hairstyles

It’s officially back to school time and that means getting back into the swing of getting ready for school. During the summer, it’s easy to get in the habit of not having to rush in the mornings to be on time for anything. But it’s back to reality and now you’re on more of a schedule. Braids are literally everywhere this season, and probably because they’re easy to do but always feel fun and exciting. There are SO many different ways to rock braids, leaving you a ton of room to play around with different options. Ever since the Kardashians have been rocking French braids in 2’s, 3’s or even more braids are even more popular. French braids are always a fun way to wear your hair, and even better way to mask 2nd-day hair. Another fun way to rock braids is to is with a small headband style braid or with your side bangs pulled back. Honestly, have fun with the braids and look to sites like Pinterest for inspiration – the options are endless!

Half-Up Updated 
another popular hair trend that recently has gotten a little bit of an update is the half up style. Instead of the traditional half-up hairstyle, leaving some of the hair on the sides near the ears and just taking a smaller chunk of hair at the top of the head and securing it in a way that gives a little perky pony. Another popular and easy way to wear your hair in a half up hairstyle is to do the same process but instead of leaving it in a ponytail securing it in more of a bun. Even adding little accessories like scarves or headbands can spruce up the look easily.

Ok so ponytails aren’t necessarily a new hairstyle, but there are some super fun ways to wear ponytails in different ways to give you a lot of variety. Low ponytails with a braid are always a great go-to (with the braids, again), wearing the braids in different ways or even having a braid leading into the low ponytail. If you want to do something other than a braid, tying your hair in a low side ponytail and looping some of the hair around to mimic a bow is the ultimate back to school girly look.

What Low Iron Levels Mean For Your Hair

When it comes to our hair and our body in general, there are so many different factors that work together. What you may not realize is how much your hair can be impacted by what’s going on in your body internally. One of the major internal struggles that can come through in your hair is iron levels being low. Researchers have discovered that when someone is struggling with low iron levels it can mean different things for their hair, and really show that they’re deficient in iron by the state of their hair. If you’re not sure what we’re talking about – keep reading!

The Major Hair Struggle
One of the most commonly known hair problems that come along with someone dealing with low iron levels, is hair loss. Yep – hair LOSS! It may sound drastic, but many scientists and researchers have discovered that when someone’s dealing with iron deficiency they’re pretty likely to have hair loss creep in on one way or another. While it’s normal for us all to lose a certain amount of hair per day, it’s when there’s an excessive amount of hair that you’re losing that could be a sign of low iron levels. The reason hair loss occurs when you’re low in iron is because your body goes into a state of panic, almost like a survival mode type of energy.

How To Help
Ok, so if you’re dealing with low iron levels (or you think you are) but you’re not anemic don’t worry because there are some ways for you to get your iron levels up without any harsh medications. The first suggested route to take when you’re low in iron levels is to include more food with iron into your diet. This is a safe and natural way for you to incorporate more iron and get your body the nutrient it’s craving. In addition taking a multivitamin with iron, or specific iron supplements can be another great way for you to give your body the boost it needs. Of course, if you feel you are dealing with an iron deficiency it’s advised that you go to see the help of a medical professional. There’s a simple test that can be done to test your iron levels, and it can at least give you a baseline and understand why you may be feeling off and/or dealing with hair loss.

It’s always fun, and interesting to discover how our internal health has such an impact on our outer appearance and health. They work together significantly! Keep in mind, that there are different levels of hair loss and iron deficiency. As mentioned, if you feel you’re dealing with low iron levels it’s best to see your medical professional to get tested to figure out where you’re at. Proper Detangling Techniques
Getting tangles in your hair seems like one of those “small” things but can really make a major impact on your hair and its health. Honestly, we don’t really spend enough time thinking about detangling our hair and how to do it properly. If we’re real with ourselves, most of us just work to get through the tangles in our hair as quickly as possible, not really taking ‘proper’ detailing techniques in mind – because we’re always in a rush. We get it, you’re busy we all live in a busy world and taking the extra time to detangle your hair seems like such a small thing. But your hair and future self with thank you for taking the time later on. Until then, we’re sharing our must-know detangling techniques to get you started.

Prep Your Hair
Just like when you’re styling your hair with a heated styling tool or just in general, you need to prep your hair. Yep, even for the detangling process. The first thing to ALWAYS be aware of is you should never try to detangle dry hair – it can cause major damage to your hair that can take a long time to fix. In addition, hair experts suggest that you always use product in your hair prior to starting the detangling process. The best types of products to use on wet hair for detangling are conditioners, leave-in conditioners, hair oil and/or a specially formulated detangling product. These haircare products will help make sure that your hair has some protection on it and allows there to be a little more slipperiness on the hair so you don’t cause more damage.

It’s All About The Technique
As human beings we naturally want to comb our hair from the root to the ends, however that’s exactly what hair experts say NOT to do. Instead of starting at the roots, it’s suggested to start at the ends (the bottom couple of inches of hair) and detangle that first and work your way up towards the roots. This will allow you to slowly detangle your hair little bit by bit instead of just ripping through from the root. Additionally, when you’re going through this process make sure you’re using a wide toothed comb – NO small toothed combs! Of course, even when you’re detangling your hair in this process it’s still advised that you take your time with it. Anytime you get to a tangle be gentle, don’t just rip on your hair but instead go slowly with your comb and work it out softly.

Detangling this way is going to be a major benefit to your hair’s health and help you to prevent too much breakage from happening. When we are in a rush and don’t take the necessary steps to detangling we end up causing breakage and other hair problems because it can be incredibly rough on your hair. Remember that you’re detangling with wet hair, and when your hair is wet it’s in its most vulnerable state.

Best Hairstyles For Sleeping

Getting up in the morning to do your hair, isn’t always the most enjoyable experience. Often times it feels draining and so time consuming, when we’d rather be spending that extra time looking at the insides of our eyelids – right? Plus, it’s one of those things that always feels like there has to be a better way. Well, lucky for us there are a ton of hairstyles that are great to sleep in that give you an extra benefit (aka less time in the morning) to styling your hair PLUS you can say good bye to waking up to a tangled mess of hair. Many experts actually say that sleeping with your hair down and loose isn’t so great as it can easily get tangled and promote breakage in the hair. Simply pull your hair back in a ponytail and tie the tail portion around into the shape of a bun and secure it. Just make sure you’re not securing anything too tightly (hello to waking up with a headache if you do), and apply some product to your hair before securing it, most suggest a frizz-control product. You’ll be able to wake up in the morning to tangle free, frizz free hair that can be worn down as is (you’ll likely have some waves) or style from there. But it will take so much work out of your morning routine of getting your hair in check. Braid It Back braids are another great hairstyle for sleeping, you’ve likely noticed the fun, natural waves you get after letting your hair down from wearing braids all day. We love braids as an overnight hairstyle because it allows you to finally rock the gorgeous waves the braids naturally create after you wear them, and it’s a super simple way to tie your hair back overnight. It’s really up to with on how much wave you want to create in the morning in regards to how you’ll actually do the braid. If you want an all over wave, then pulling your hair back into two French braids will be a great option. If you’re more into just some waviness from your cheek down then tying your hair back into one or two low ponytail braids will do the trick. Women with headband The Headband Finally, one of the quickly rising hairstyles for sleeping is the headband trick to create curls. All you do is use a soft headband, place it over your head and hair (think boho vibe style) and start taking pieces of your hair and wrap it around your headband. Once you wake up you can just release the hair from the headband and you’ll have gorgeous, beachy waves/curls. Nighttime Hair Care

Ok, so you’ve gotten into the routine of doing a nighttime skincare regimen (we hope!), but have you been leaving your hair high and dry?  (pun intended there)  You likely have a system in place for your morning hair care routine, but just head to bed with your hair however it ends up.  Don’t you think it’s time to make a switch?  Your hair needs a little love at night just like your skin does!  If you’re new to the whole nighttime hair care, we’re sharing some of the must-know tips and steps to take according to our research.

Start Conditioning
Using a deep conditioning mask is suggested by many hair care experts when it comes to hair care.  It’s best when done at night so you’re not rushing in the morning, and have more time to take your time to do it the right way.  There are some that suggest leaving the deep conditioning product in overnight and washing it out in the morning.  This goes for hair masks in general, but it’s best to do them in your nighttime hair care routine.

Consider Your Sheets
If you haven’t already heard, satin sheets are THE thing to have in your bed.  Not just for your skin, but also for your hair.  Since we sleep for many hours (hopefully!) on our sheets at night, satin has been found to not cause too much static or breakage in the hair.  Also, make sure you’re changing your sheets regularly.  Since our hair and skin has oil, using the same sheets without changing to wash too long can cause more damage than good over time.

Tie Your Hair Back
When we sleep with our hair down and free flowing all night long it can develop knots and even cause breakage in our hair.  So in order to avoid this, it’s suggested to tie your hair back.  You’re not going to want to just tie it back with any old hair band, make sure you’re using a soft hair tie like a scrunchy or even a bandana if you want to keep all your hair off your face and healthy in the process.

Apply Oil
Another tip suggested by the experts is to actually apply a small amount of oil to your hair prior to bedtime.  Applying a small amount of oil to your hair (primarily focusing on the ends, which tend to be drier) is a great way to bring more moisture to your hair and help the ends heal and appear shinier.

Shower at Night
Some experts suggest showering and washing your hair at night to be a better option to doing so in the morning, because it allows you to let your hair air dry overnight and avoid too much heat damage from using heated styling products too often.  It’s a great way to minimize how much heat your styling your hair with, and can even help save you time in the morning!

Pobs, Bobs and Lobs

There’s recently been a pretty big rise in popularity with short hair.  Some of our favorite celebs have gone for the big chop with their luscious locks of hair.  But there’s something so refreshing and liberating about cutting your hair off in a rather dramatically short way.  If you’ve been considering a bob hairstyle, we thought we would go over some of the varieties of bob haircuts to give you some inspiration and ideas before getting the bob yourself.

If you aren’t quite sure what the term “Pob” is referring to it is actually a term that came about when Victoria Beckham chopped her hair.  So it actually stands for Posh Bob.  The pob is known for being an angled bob hairstyle.  The great thing about the pob is it’s a hairstyle you’re able to customize in length and however you choose to wear the hair parted, to flatter your personal face shape.  The biggest differentiator between a pob and traditional bob is that it’s created with an angled cut, which can be really flattering when cut in a way that flatters the person’s face shape.

The traditional bob hairstyle is a classic hairstyle that is one that feels up-to-date regardless of how many times we’ve seen people rocking it.  Traditionally, a bob is a blunt cut hairstyle that’s shorter in length (typically around the cheekbone in length) and all one length.  While there are now a lot of different variations of the bob hairstyle and ways to interpret it and make it your own, they all stem from the original bob hairstyle.  One of the great things about a traditional bob hairstyle is your options to style it, whether you wear it straight and sleek or curled to created texturized waves it’s timeless and gorgeous.

Another different take on the traditional bob hairstyle, the lob is basically just standing for a long bob.  These are hairstyles that are usually a little more blunt in cut like a traditional bob, but just longer in length.  Generally, they’re done with all one length however there are ways for you to incorporate layers into a lob as well.  The most differentiating factor is that the bottom/longest layer of hair in a lob is more of a blunt cut.  This hairstyle gives some additional options to how you can style and wear your hair when cut this way because you’re getting a little extra length.

The great thing about the bob varieties is that there really are so many right now, hairstylists are more comfortable than ever (it seems) to experiment with cutting hair in different bob varieties.  Since the bob haircut is such a trend right now there’s no better time than now to experiment with different bob variations for your own hair.  If you’ve been considering getting a change in hair, consider asking your hairstylist for a variation of a bob haircut.  Keep in mind a bob haircut doesn’t have to mean the traditional bob.

Pretty Overnight Hair Styles

As women, we definitely want to feel like our hair looks and feels pretty.  But we don’t necessarily want to have to spend our entire morning before work making it happen.  Luckily, there have been some women who have discovered ways to style hair overnight (yes, while we sleep) making it possible to have pretty hair that’s basically accomplished at night.  This means you’re able to catch a few extra minutes of shut-eye OR just not have to rush out of the house every morning.  We hope you’re as excited as we are about this, because we’re sharing a few of our favorites!

Achieving voluminous curls isn’t really something that’s easy to achieve, until now.  Yes, it’s truly possible to achieve voluminous curls as you sleep through the night.  There are actually quite a few different techniques and ways to try this (just do an online search and you’ll find out!), but our favorite and easiest is placing a soft headband on your head, over your hair.  Once you’ve done that taking the hair under the headband and twisting it up and around the headband.  It’s recommended to do this with dry or mostly dry hair, but once you’ve done that go to sleep and wake up to just release the hair from the headband and run your fingers through the curls.  Once you’ve done that you’re done!

Voluminous Hair
If you’re not really a curly hair girl, but you love getting voluminous hair effortlessly we’ve got a great trick!  Pulling your hair back in a ponytail (dry hair) and taking different sections within the ponytail to loosely roll downward toward the base and pinning them in to create a bun like look.  Going to bed with your hair like this, waking up to release it, will leave you with an effortless look that has great volume at the ends and throughout the hair and barely took you any time at all!  Of course, don’t forget to add some volumizing/texturizing spray while you’re pulling it up.

Old School Hollywood Waves
Want something a little more streamlined for your hair?  You can do that overnight too!  This is one of the old school, original ways to get overnight hair and can be done with damp hair.  After you’ve applied a texturizing product to your hair begin by taking 1-2 inch sections (depending on what size waves you want to create), wrap the sections of hair around your fingers to create a curl once you’ve done that until the ends are at your scalp you pin the section with a bobby pin.  Do that until you’ve done this process to your entire head of hair.  It’s best to secure the sections by placing bobby pins in an X position to secure the hair overnight.  Go to sleep with that in your hair, once you’ve woken up for the day you simply remove the bobby pins and brush your hair through softly until you’re happy with the waves.

Caring For Foil Bleached Hair

Bleaching your hair in any way can look amazing, and give you a gorgeous standout look.  However, it can also be extremely harsh on your skin.  So while it looks great, it’s super important that you’re taking the proper steps for caring for bleached skin to make sure you’re maintaining your hair’s health to the best of your ability.  If you’ve foil bleached your hair, or you’ve been considering it, you’re going to want to make sure you follow these tips for caring for it to avoid any potential damage to your hair.

Re-Examine Your Hair Care Products
If you’ve bleached your hair at all, you’re going to need to take a look at the shampoo, conditioner and other haircare products you’re using to make sure they’re going to work ok with your now bleached hair.  Since your hair has (or will) gone through some pretty harsh treatment with the bleach it’s advised by the hair experts themselves that you actually use products that are milder and that you don’t over-wash your hair.  You’ve probably heard before that washing your hair daily actually isn’t that great for its health and when you’ve bleached it’s even more important to live by that rule.

Take it Easy
Similarly to the haircare products, since your hair has been put under some stress with the bleach it’s highly advised that you take it easy with hairstyling in general especially when it comes to heated hairstyling.  When we say take it easy, we mean it’s suggested that you cut back on using heated hairstyling tools on a super regular basis.  The heat from heated hairstyling tools can cause damage to hair that’s already been put under a pretty good amount of stress.  So instead, cut back and try to reserve the heated styling for the days when you really want/need to instead of making it an ever day thing.

Make Sure You’re Using Product
While we want to make sure you’re re-examining your hair care products, we want to make sure we don’t leave you thinking you should SKIP using them.  Incorporating hair products like hair masks, moisturizers, etc. are going to be essential to bringing back some moisture to your hair (it gets dried out pretty significantly in bleaching) and helping to repair any damage that’s been done.  But, make sure you do them on a regular basis.  Not only should you be using these types of products, but they’re not products you want to be cheap with.  Using products that are high quality and made with quality ingredients are going to ensure that your hair is getting exactly what it needs to maintain and/or repair any damage that’s been done.

Anytime you bleach your hair, it’s also advised that you use a high-quality bleach (if you’re doing this at home).  Ask some trusted hair professionals for their input if and when you can to further ensure that you’re going about the process in the best way possible.  It’s all about maintaining and repairing your hair as much as possible.  Don’t wait until your hair is in a really bad place before you decide to take additional action for haircare.
