Chances are you’ve heard the news that washing your hair every day is a beauty routine of the past. There’s more and more evidence that shows it’s actually better for you to NOT wash your hair daily. Now you may be totally on board with that…other than the fact that you also experience greasy hair quickly. We’ve all been there where we feel like we’re doing the right thing for our hair and then realize our hair starts to look greasy. So how do we avoid greasy hair? We’ve discovered a few ways for fighting the greasies so you can spend less time worry and more time rocking your locks.
Get On A Schedule
The thing about having oily or greasy hair is your natural instinct is to want to continuously wash your hair to eliminate the grease. The downside of that is you’re likely actually causing your hair to become even greasier. When we wash our hair we’re stripping our hair of the natural oils, when we do strip the hair of the natural oils its natural reaction is to replace that oil – see the cycle? So while you want to continuously wash it, it’s probably making things worse. Now before you go and skip washing your hair for days on end, experts suggest actually tapering down and getting on more of a schedule. If you’re washing your hair daily now, try skipping every other day and work your way up. It’s said that most people should be able to go 2-3 days without washing, for the best results and hair health. Once you taper down your washing, get on more of a set schedule to keep track and help you get a system in place.
Use Proper Products
If you’re prone to greasy hair, one of the biggest factors you need to consider (other than the hair washing) is what type of haircare products you’re using. You’re going to want to air on the side of lightweight products that are going to give your hair the moisture it needs (as well as lock in natural moisture) but also not add too much weight or product to your hair. Often times using haircare products that are heavy can add to looking/feeling like your hair is greasy. If you have really greasy hair, look for haircare products that are specifically formulated for your hair type to make the most out of using them.
Healthy Hair Habits
Of course, we couldn’t talk about haircare with greasy hair without mentioning getting into healthy hair habits. We’re all prone to picking up a few bad habits every once in a while, but when you’re really wanting to avoid greasy hair it’s extra important. Touching your hair ALL the time is one of those bad habits, we all do it, but when you’re prone to greasy hair it can really add to that quickly. The oil from your hands is going directly into your hair – no good! Additionally, avoiding using heated styling tools every day can be another factor to consider when fighting greasy hair. It adds to the stress of your hair, and it’s best to not use those every single day anyways.
