Taming Wild Curls

Woman with curly hair

Curls are trending like nobody’s business, and with so many naturally curly girls letting the strands “fly where they may,” there’s a fine line that’s beginning to evolve, between “natural” and “gnarly.” The world is just not yet ready for some of the wilder forms of hair expressing itself freely, and so the business of suitable curl control is also big business with this trend. Everyone with curls is on a secret quest to perfect their curls, and the truth be known–they’re going through an amazing number of products and practices to get there. The results? Not as great as promised, for the most part. Follow along for some tips on getting your curly children to behave.

Your Water-Drenched Curl Power
Without getting too heady, when your hair comes in massive contact with water, your hair’s natural hydrogen and salt bonds become weakened and ultimately broken. Your hair will never feel so pliable and soft as when it’s in this state. The danger here is that your hair is in its weakest state when wet, even though those heavy, elongated and beautifully separated curls would be the bomb to have all the time. Then, you leave the shower and as your hair dries, the look fades, and eventually vanishes, and your hair will once more be rigid and unruly.

Target That Frizz Effectively
Your curls might be lovely, for the most part, if you could only do something about those random rogue strays that are the authors of frizz. Aligning them with other curls is the objective you’re after here. And it can be done.

Choose Your Products Wisely
By using the right products, you can define your curls with precise accuracy, and manipulate exact curl patterns by using rods, a comb or even your fingers to address every strand with articulate twisting and coiling that is even and part of a whole frizz-free look. Look for products that are formulated with fixative properties, as otherwise, all your hard work won’t last, and your luscious curls will soon do what you had hoped they wouldn’t do. Once you have completed styling your curls, seal the deal with the right oil based product, for extra lasting power and shine with tame strays.

Divide and Conquer
Banishing wild, independent strays is a process that takes time. This is why you will always see a lot of women for whom free frizzies are a given part of their look. There is no “one big sweep” to be done here. You must work with small sections, making sure to work the product through it evenly, while training each one. Then, as your hair dries, the product will lock in your efforts and prevent those careless looking strays from hijacking your hairstyle.
